Challenges Faced

Challenge 1: Networking Architecture

Organizing and establishing a well-defined vlan and sub network infrastructure on premises that could be easily and efficiently scaled and incorporated into a public cloud.

Challenge 2: Sizing of workloads

Establishing adequate sizing of workloads in order to determine which workloads stayed on-premise and which workloads were more adequate to be migrated to the public cloud.

Challenge 3: Security and patient information privacy

GELA patients needed to be guaranteed privacy and seamless connectivity between their private and public clouds under every possible work protocol.

Solution Provided

We at ne Digital, an IBM Advanced Business Partner, had already had established a VMware high availability cluster in place for GELA and in the network of data centers for IBM Bluemix. The next step was only natural - a small but powerful solution of PureApplication Software that is able to deploy and maintain basic patterns required to support online mobile applications for patients and physicians.

Implementation Strategy

Infrastructure

This solution makes use Bare Metal machines for ESXi hypervisors, a PureApp Manager running in a virtual RHEL instance, an OS Nexus SAN storage system and a Brocade vRouter Firewall solution to ensure VPN connectivity between data centers is established and maintained in secure fashion with complete granular control.

Networking

A complete set of VLANs was configured to segment traffic for management, redundant storage, public traffic and a three-tier environment for database, application servers and web servers.

Connectivity

The on-premise networking is comprised of IBM and Juniper switching and routing and an IPSEC VPN tunnel was established between a Juniper SRX Cluster and the Brocade vRouter in IBM Bluemix.

Tech Stack Deployed

  • IBM Bluemix Bare Metal Servers
  • IBM Bluemix Virtual Instances
  • OS Nexus Virtual Appliance
  • IBM PureApplication Software
  • Brocade vRouter
